Mexico Ministry bans poultry imports from Arkansas
Mexico will block poultry imports from Arkansas until further notice, following an outbreak of avian influenza there earlier this month, the Agriculture Ministry said last week. “This precautionary measure is being put into effect to avoid the risk of introduction of the agent into national territory,” the ministry said in an ” urgent” letter to Mexico’s federal meat inspection agency. The strain, which U.S. officials have said is “very low risk” and poses little threat to humans or livestock, was detected at the beginning of June in a flock of 15,000 chickens owned by Tyson Foods, Inc.
Sanderson to delay construction of N.C. complex
Sanderson Farms, Inc., announced that it will delay construction and start-up of its new Kinston, North Carolina, poultry complex. Sanderson Farms previously announced plans on April 24, 2008, to invest approximately $126.5 million for construction of a new feed mill, poultry processing plant and hatchery.

The Kroger Co., a Cincinnati, Ohio, retailer is recalling an undetermined amount of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced.
Alpharma announces flood assistance initiative for the U.S. agricultural heartland
Alpharma, Inc., announced an initiative that will stimulate business opportunities for livestock producers suffering from recent flooding in the central U.S. agricultural heartland. Alpharma will donate a portion of all U.S. livestock product sales recorded in July to help fund flood relief efforts throughout the Mississippi River valley. The flood relief program will apply to Alpharma’s line of livestock medicated feed additives.

MEXICO: Mexico calls for reducing production of ethanol
Mexico’s agriculture secretary says ethanol production is bankrupting cattle and poultry farmers and causing food prices to hit record highs around the world. Agriculture Secretary Alberto Cardenas says countries should change their policies and reduce production of grains for the alternative fuel. Speaking to cattle farmers last week, Cardenas says the government has earmarked more than 9 billion pesos (US$8.75 million) to help 500,000 ranchers.

UNITED KINGDOM: Turkey firm stops selling imports
Turkey producer Bernard Matthews is to stop selling imported turkey meat.From August all the turkey the major poultry producer sells in the UK will be reared on its own farms in East Anglia, the firm told BBC Look East. The Norfolk-based firm has previously been importing some meat from Hungary and Brazil.
